Indianapolis – We won’t vote until November, but the candidates to replace Evan Bayh in the US Senate are running television commercials across the state now. Democrat Brad Ellsworth began running his ads this week. Republican candidate Dan Coats spoke to Eyewitness News Thursday.

Coats is spending this summer criss-crossing the state campaigning for the Senate seat that will soon be vacated by the retiring Evan Bayh. A former US senator and ambassador to Germany, Coats says Hoosiers should be very comfortable with him because he still stands for the same things he always has.

“Limited government, less spending, lower taxes. A government not intrusive in our daily lives. More privacy and faithfulness to our constitution of the United States,” said Coats.

Coats says the biggest issues currently confronting the United States are the economy, the deficit, health care and immigration. He says it’s wrong for the federal government to sue a state for taking action on immigration that the federal government should have done. It’s an issue that has confronted the US since the 1980s and candidate Coats says the problem is the laws are not enforced.

“People have to be convinced before they look at anything else to do with immigration that we have stopped the bleeding; stopped the flow of illegal immigrants to this country. I don’t blame Arizona for taking the action that it has taken. The federal government failed to secure that border,” he said.

Coats’ Democratic opponent has started a television ad campaign labeling Coats as a lobbyist. Coats counters with a litany of problems he says the Democrats have left for the country to deal with.

“We’ve just had a run on a liberal agenda that is not focused on the economy, added an enormous amount to the deficit and to the debt,” said Coats.

For his part Coats says while he is not a Washington insider he does know how Washington works and doesn’t work and that is why he says he is the man to help fix it. If voters elect Republicans in the fall, he says it will help bring about the balance needed to fix Washington.
