Indiana is well positioned for success when America moves out of this recession. Washington should be an ally in this effort by focusing on pro-growth policies. Dan Coats believes in reducing federal spending, opposing tax increases, reforming the tax code, reducing regulation, supporting small business and manufacturing, and prioritizing education and job training policies.
Dan Coats believes economic growth needs to be focused on two major initiatives in order to begin restoring America’s economy and putting Hoosiers back to work:
- Placing spending restraints on Congress to reduce our deficits and debt.
• Earmark Reform • Line Item Veto • Balanced Budget - Supporting economic policies focused on encouraging businesses and industries to increase their level of confidence to allow risk, innovation, growth, and add employment.
Fighting Tax Increases and Reforming a Complicated Tax Code
Keeping taxes low has proven to stimulate lasting economic growth and job creation. Congress should:
- Make the 2001 and 2003 bi-partisan tax cuts permanent and repeal the estate tax once and for all.
- Explore ways to reform and simplify the tax code to stimulate economic growth.
Small Businesses
Small business is the backbone of our economy. They are the first job creator and the first to feel the negative impact of policies. We must:
- Oppose tax increases on small businesses
- Reduce regulations being placed on entrepreneurs
- Improve access to capital for growth
- Not burden small business with costly, mandatory health care reform
Manufacturing
Hoosiers have a proud tradition of creating, building, and producing as part of the United State’s top manufacturing economy in the world. We need to continue that legacy through:
- Reducing the corporate tax rate to match industrially competitive countries
- Research and Development (R&D) Credit
- Preserving employer-employee relationships without unnecessary federal intervention
- Tax incentives to encourage businesses to return jobs back to the U.S.
- Supporting Hoosier Exports
Education and Job Training
Education and training are the keys to a successful and competitive workforce. Our priorities should be:
- Focus on competitiveness
- Flexibility in job training programs
- Encourage lower cost post-secondary education options
