One of the greatest threats not currently being addressed is the nuclearization and weaponization of Iran.
We didn’t need to get to this point. We have not put enough pressure on our allies to put pressure on Iran. We have not imposed the kind of biting sanctions that can put the squeeze on them in terms of whether they were going to go forward with this or accept embargos on gasoline supplies and shipping oil out of the country.
Unfortunately, because of failed policies in Washington, the time for all this has passed. I have co-authored three bipartisan studies on Iran (available here, here and here) outlining the steps needed to immediately address the Iranian issue. The current administration pushed those aside and ignored the recommendations.
If we can’t deal with the Iranian questions, we are looking at instability and a potential arms race throughout the Middle East, with disastrous consequences.
Everyone on both sides of the aisle, on both sides of the Atlantic, around the world, has said it is unacceptable to allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. And yet, no one has gone past that point and said “If it’s unacceptable, what are we going to do?” And now it seems we’re being asked to accept the unacceptable. This is not the way to protect the future security of America.
